Interview with the Wiesbaden author Ernst Probst

Question: Mr. Probst, how did you get the idea to write your first book?
answer asked by the publication of a long newspaper article on a popular science topic me my Mainzer editor colleague Karl Heinz Withofs: "Why do not you write one book," The very next day I wrote the first book publishing company and quickly got a rejection. Then I asked at the next book publisher and got the answer, I would indeed write very fluently, but would be interested in the proposed topic no one. But the third publisher, C. Bertelsmann, showed interest, offered me a contract in 1982 and even paid an advance.

question: What happened next?
Answer: My manuscript for "Germany in prehistoric times was more extensive and in 1985 was clear that the retail price was advised not to keep more of less than 40 DM. The release date was therefore postponed for one year to produce the great work in all peace. Some scientists who knew about my book project scoffed, even on my "Neverending Story". In autumn 1986, then appeared at last a thick belt with numerous photos, drawings, paintings and maps, which were specially created for it. This tome had a proud retail price of 168 DM in the publishing promised with this relatively expensive work of any great success. But as more and more newspapers and even the "Spiegel" about the book reported, had shortly before Christmas, a second edition will be printed. A total of five runs, including two book club editions, sold with different prices.

question: What happened to the "Germany in prehistoric times?
Answer: The success of my first book "Germany in prehistoric times" was not hidden from other publishers. Even the aforementioned publisher, said the proposed prehistoric theme would hardly interest anyone one day announced to me and suggested that I should now write to him about something else. I spoke with a smile and without ulterior motive to his editor, Dr. Erich Roessler C. Bertelsmann, who looked after me. Shortly thereafter, the publisher offered me a so-called "best selling author" a contract for a sequel, whose title is not yet stable. This "Germany in the Stone Age" was born (1991), about the reported "the mirror" and many other magazines and newspapers. The Stone Age book weighed about three kilograms, took it to cost a total of three runs and at times up to 198 marks.

Question: Was your book, Germany in the Bronze Age "(1996) is also a great success?
Answer: The "Bronze Age" interested the audience noticeably less than the primitive and the Stone Age. Therefore, there was only two runs, including a cheap book club edition. The "mirror" in that work was no longer interested. The publisher does not seem particularly well, because for this title was little advertising and made some reviewers should pay half the retail price. At that time I vowed to publish a book more in this publisher. And so it happened.

Question: But you have to date more than 100 books, paperbacks, pamphlets, museum guides and e-books published, where are they published?
Answer: In 2001 I published my books in my own small publishing house, which I, 2006, for reasons of age, and later with "GRIN for academic texts". With "GRIN" http://www.grin.de I am very satisfied. There, every year a number of paperbacks and e-books published by myself, without anyone talking to me purely on the design or the contents.
